RICHMOND REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY

In the summer of 2006, U-TURN entered into a collaborative effort with the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority [RRHA] to provide a Sports Performance and Character Development Program. Eighteen children between the ages of seven and thirteen were selected by the RRHA to enter this results-oriented program. The program ran from June 26 - August 24. The children trained in tennis and sport science for four days per week. They received basketball and football instruction two days per week. The kids trained for eight hours per week.

RICHMOND REDEVELOPMENT AND HOUSING AUTHORITY

U-TURN's intent in this collaborative program is to help RRHA's young residents of public housing acquire the skills necessary to develop a strong sense of character and purpose for living. The vehicle of high-performance sports is used to help teach them disciplines of goal-setting, perseverance, competition, striving for excellence.

The summer culminated with a trip to the U. S. Open from August 25-27, 2006. U-TURN took a bus-load of kids and parents from various housing projects to New York for tennis and an evening in Manhattan (Times Square). It was a blast! The kids were so well behaved. Specifically, the kids spent the 26 th at the National Tennis Center (Flushing Meadows, NY), attending the Arthur Ashe Kids' Day event. We look forward to making this an annual trip. Come join us!
